**please excuse the voice-this dry winter weather has taken a toll on the VOX

[00:00:01] The following is a presentation of the six arrows radio network Welcome to the Ham Radio 360 podcast with your host K4 CDA Cale Nelson I like it and I hope you do too. It's different and

[00:00:30] If there's gonna be one word that could describe this next program, it's gonna be different Different in quotation marks there. It's all about being different here. Hey, what's up?

[00:00:40] It's been quite a while and I appreciate you coming back to hang out with me here on the Ham Radio 360 podcast If you don't know who I am or maybe you've forgotten over the last couple of months

[00:00:52] I'm Cale Nelson. She said it a little differently than I do and my college K4 CDN I've been podcasting about amateur radio for about three and a half or so years took three months off And man, it was the nicest best break

[00:01:07] you know when you have it like worked out of your house in 15 years almost and You know you find something else to do and then you actually stop doing it for a while It's like having a vacation

[00:01:20] I haven't had one of those forever. So thank you for understanding and it was it was kind of funny you know when you when you're doing something every two weeks and you're creating something and You're in people's, you know, you're basically in their face all the time

[00:01:36] And when you take a break it kind of freaks people out a little bit maybe And I don't say that like bragging or nothing What I'm saying is people were contacting me and thank you everyone that did by the way

[00:01:46] They were you know everything okay is your family. Okay? You sick. You know, I heard it all And I didn't mind by the way it wasn't that but but thank you everybody who checked in on me to make sure I was okay I was fine it was

[00:01:59] Man, you know, I know a lot of you guys don't follow the National Football League and that's okay It's kind of been a bad joke this year, but Bruce Arians is a football coach He recently retired from the Arizona Cardinals the winning us coach for the Cardinals

[00:02:13] And it's kind of kind of cool But it's kind of sad when you see this guy's retirement speech and One of the things that he said it really spoke to spoke a lot to me was that he'd been coaching since about

[00:02:25] 75 or 79 or something like that and it was background. I think he said it was Maybe Thanksgiving or maybe even before But he was with his family and he's got a son I guess maybe some more kids

[00:02:37] I don't know but he he said that his his son came walking through the room and his wife Acknowledged that his son came through the room and she said wow, can you believe he's gonna be 40 years old this year and Bruce?

[00:02:51] It hit him. I mean it just tore him down and it's evident in the I'm even linked this in the show notes because This was this was really touching for me But but it it kind of spoke to why Kel needed a break and

[00:03:03] Why a lot of things will be said over the next however long this show takes As we go through the the next the plan for the next year so Anyway, Bruce realized and he even said, you know

[00:03:14] There's years at a past of my son's life that that he basically wasn't even there for because he was so involved in a national football league coaching at some level and He said I want to go back and make it some time. So he decided to retire

[00:03:29] So I'm not retiring. This isn't a retirement speech by the way But and that even happened just like last week But it kind of spoke to where I've been and why I needed a break So if you've never listened this program, this might be a little confusing

[00:03:41] I'd like to invite you to go back and check out the backlog of Shows that we've created up to this point There's this is number 88 and if you're one of those CW guys or gals

[00:03:50] I think that means like hugs and kisses or something which is kind of weird and And I'm not trying to go there. So I'm really I'm not a CW guy one of those no tech guys no code tech guys whatever and

[00:04:04] You know, I don't I don't really get that so I know 73 And I think 88 is kind of like maybe it's something maybe it's how female sign I'm not being sexist there girls. I just ladies. I don't I don't know what to say

[00:04:16] So anyway, this is show 88 been doing this podcast since 2014 it started out as a really bad joke Honestly, it really did it was supposed to go about five shows and then just kind of vanish into the ether and kill

[00:04:28] It's just gonna be a good ham and you know do things that he's interested in Lo and behold that didn't happen and three and a half years later

[00:04:35] I got to looking around and there's my 14 year old son who I remember at five pounds and seven ounces bringing home and He's bigger than me now and studying for his ham license, but Man, there's there's a time. I wish I could make up with that. So

[00:04:52] What does all that mean? Well, we're gonna talk about that over the next couple of minutes here on episode number 88 and Again, if you're a brand new listener this show may may just kind of flurry you so They're normally not like this normal

[00:05:05] This is a monologue show, right and I never have monologue shows Maybe maybe three or four total since the podcast began So and normally those were because the guests that I had lined up something happened

[00:05:16] We couldn't get together at the last minute and kill had to kind of wing it through the thing there So anyway, this is a podcast about ham radio It spawned at birth. Well, what's the best word to use there? Anyway, we've launched two shows out of this one

[00:05:31] The first one being the workbench podcast now known as ham radio workbench and they have their own RSS feed now What does that mean for you if you haven't heard if you don't know it means you need to go to your

[00:05:42] iTunes or wherever you get your podcast from and you need to subscribe to their show just go to Whatever you use okay and type in ham radio workbench and hit the subscribe button

[00:05:54] Just like with field radio podcast go to wherever you get your podcast from and click the field radio Podcast and subscribe if you have problems that go to ham radio 360 comm

[00:06:05] There's tabs at the top of the screen and then one says workbench. The other says field radio podcast and you can Click that as a sub menu there says subscribe

[00:06:17] And it gives you every link that you would ever need to subscribe to those two shows and you need to do that And so here's one of the things people ask, you know, why did why did the workbench go independent?

[00:06:27] Or you know, why did John put his over there? That was all done on purpose and it was done to a couple of different reasons number one to make my life easier with the work involved in posting three different programs The second reason is to make

[00:06:42] Your job or your life easier and that is to enjoy the show without having to dig through Say the field radio show to get to the workbench or to dig through the workbench to get to the field radio show This way if you don't like me, that's okay

[00:06:55] You don't have to listen to me at all. You can go straight to the workbench you can go straight to the field radio show and Bypass the releases from this particular branding Spect into the spectrum. So it's something I've been really really

[00:07:10] I'll but back George and Jeremy to do it finally we got it turned around and it's working great. So If you have not yet subscribed to the workbench show if you have not yet subscribed to the field radio podcast

[00:07:23] Please do that so you don't miss their great content when they release their shows At the end of this month, this is February 2018 by the way Happy New Year at the end of this month

[00:07:33] The only show that you'll get in the feed that you're listening to right now is anything that I release myself from Ham radio 360 So if you're a big workbench fan, you won't find it here anymore, right?

[00:07:46] And we already trying to get you to go make sure you don't forget to check out John's show The field radio podcast he has his own feed. He has since day one did that on purpose by the way

[00:07:55] So excuse me make sure you're subscribing where you need to be now Welcome back brand new year brand new show those guys had they had the opportunity to do a new year show I'm doing mine after the new year

[00:08:08] And I'm not jealous that I didn't get a chance to do it before but I feel like going into the new year with some great expectations, I wanted to do a new year show too so

[00:08:18] There may be more than one show release this week and the reason being is because I got some great content for you Prepared and ready to go But I've got to lay down some ground rules and we've got some rules to talk about in

[00:08:30] 2018 now number one the rule number one and you notice this if you were paying attention If not go back and re-listen to the intro music here new music new ladies voice miss Christine's already

[00:08:42] But the reason I did that the reason it's so dramatically different is because this show From this point forward will be so dramatically different than what it's been up into this point So if you're familiar

[00:08:55] I'm not changing who I am but we're changing the structure of everything around me. How's that? We being kill Okay, I don't have multiple personalities. I'm just it's you know, sometimes it's easier to say we than I you know It sounds less. I don't know anyway

[00:09:10] all right, so No outside corporate sponsors from this point forward. I'm not mad Nobody made me mad hurt my feelings kick sand in my face nothing like that main trading company

[00:09:22] One of the most amazing podcast sponsors one could ever ask for they were with me from before day one It still breaks my heart when I see people online Shopping somewhere else because I can tell you that Richard and Christine Lenore

[00:09:36] Offer not only the best pricing but the best customer service experience that you can have and that was the reason I had them come on as a sponsor back in the day So although we're great friends and we share so many common values

[00:09:51] Thank you very much to main trading company, but I have no I'm deciding from this point forward in the best interest of the show to go forward without outside corporate sponsorship again, the same thing with Ella craft awesome dudes and gals by the way and

[00:10:07] Great gear if you're looking to go climb up a mountain or do some dix but it's inser whatnot You can't beat it is I mean it's top of line stuff Dan Romantic

[00:10:16] An awesome dude if you're looking to study to upgrade or become a ham make sure you check out his no nonsense study guides We've had great sponsors bridge com systems, you know my local club needs a repeater

[00:10:27] I'm like we were happy with our 220 machine from bridge com. Why not buy a 2 meter for them I don't know how that'll go, but it's still my recommendation just some awesome people again, and they got great barbecue up there too by the way

[00:10:42] So it's a it's a decision that I've made to go forward with no outside corporate sponsorships of here on the Ham radio 360 podcast that's rule number one rule number two no more No more

[00:10:58] bi-weekly podcast from kale and the ham radio 360 feet and the reason I'm doing that is because I want to and it's been three and a half years of making sure either myself or someone in my place created a great program

[00:11:15] to get to you the listener to enjoy every other week and That has gotten to be really hard and there's a lot of things that I'm responsible for even though I'm not employed Outside the house or within any of our other small businesses

[00:11:32] It's still a lot of responsibility and it's Lot a lot of stuff for me to do so when I look at things around me And I see things not getting done or done to the standards that I wish it

[00:11:43] You know it kind of makes it easy for me to say I need to I need to cut something loose And one of the things that I'm doing is I'm taking a break from from podcasting at the level

[00:11:54] I was before now kill you just had a break. I sure did and it was the best thing ever Thank you for being patient with me, but I'm not setting my son. Just oh here it is

[00:12:04] I'm the guy who is who is so determined to do an awesome job It's something like this that I'll let other stuff go So I don't disappoint you the listener right and This is Kale talking if anybody's curious

[00:12:21] This isn't like a nagging wife because I don't have one of those she doesn't listen I could say anything she wouldn't know but my wife's awesome by the way very patient lady, but anyway the truth of the matter is is podcasting takes a lot of time and money

[00:12:38] It may not feel that way or sing that way at times, but it did there's an there's an investment you have to make and Currently where I'm at in life with with my family situation I have decided that putting the strain on myself to create a bi-weekly show

[00:12:55] To make good content every two weeks for you is just a little more than I'm willing to take right now It's a little more than I'm willing to invest in myself or invest out of my sad. Would you say that? I don't know how you would that problem

[00:13:09] I don't know if that came out right, but we're gonna leave it Because I'm also experimenting with some new Some new ways to record the program here So thank you for bearing with me through that by the way anyway no more every two weeks now

[00:13:22] That doesn't mean I'm quitting my goal is to give you at least one show every month It might be four for instance this month January it'll be at least three and you're like well, that's more work

[00:13:35] No, it's not really okay because I've already got the content prepared and ready to go So I was actually working on my time off that makes any sense. You guys do that you need to stop enjoy your family so anyway

[00:13:50] Release schedule the the the only rules to that is I'm not gonna release on the same day John releases I'm not gonna release the week that the workbench releases

[00:14:00] So I'm gonna try to stay in the same confines that I've had before but the every other week things not gonna happen anymore Unless something major changes and I don't anticipate any changes like that so that's that's That's rule number two rule number three

[00:14:19] If you haven't noticed I'm not on Facebook anymore And I killed Twitter too that doesn't mean that the accounts are closed. They're like what do they call it? disabled or something I can get back in and Make changes or say hey anytime. I want to but

[00:14:35] I removed all that stuff from my phone months ago and then here lately I decided to go ahead and just close the accounts because even though it's not on your phone

[00:14:46] It's on your PC. So now instead of being the guy at the restaurant who stares at his phone all the time I'm the guy who walks through the laundry room and stares at my computer all the time because I'm trying to keep up with

[00:14:57] What I don't see on my phone anymore so I can stay relevant in The conversation about amateur radio in my podcast so It's not that I don't like any of you matter of fact I've made some great friends over the last three and a half years

[00:15:12] Most of you I've never met some of you I have and really appreciated those encounters But we're still friends. I'm just not on there anymore You know, it's just one of those things you can let the distraction become the distraction or not

[00:15:26] And I chose to not allow the distraction to become a distraction Again the big word being different. I'm just who I'm doing what I want to do because I can right so anyway

[00:15:38] Social media is out for me for the time being again. This is something that I have Well, there's folks here who could tell you that they knew that that I was not your social media guy anyway

[00:15:51] And it was just it was just too much. I'm not interested. Sorry. I don't mean that to be offensive I'm just I'm being honest. Well, you guys expect honesty from me That's what you're going to get here in this program as well

[00:16:03] And we'll continue to talk about honesty in the next little segment here as we talk about Sponsorship again, I've already mentioned that this program is now fully independent fully sponsored and paid for by the listener And thank you for you patreon people out there

[00:16:20] Patrons I think I'm supposed to call you how freaking cool is it to be on vacation and still having people sign up to Support your podcast now that just blows me away. I'm like are these people crazy

[00:16:32] I'm not even doing anything and they're signing up now granted. Hey in full transparency here I had that I had that podcast page on patreon paused so didn't generate any income while I was away actually prevented the Withdrawals from happening from your account to come to mind

[00:16:51] So I didn't make any money on patreon while I was away I thought that if I'm not creating anything there's no reason for me to be charging on those accounts So I paused it, but it still allowed people to Come in and and they did which

[00:17:06] Freaking cool is that so thank you everyone who was a patron on patreon those of you who are giving Through PayPal and other things that all right So no more sponsors from the outside. It's coming all from you guys

[00:17:21] And if you are participating in that fashion, thank you if you're considering it Thank you in advance and if you're not interested. Hey understand totally, you know, I'm not I'm not here To be that guy that this is not like one of those, you know

[00:17:34] PBS telethon kind of things if you would like to help financially support the program and what I'm doing here the website the URLs the Hosting cost and even my time feel free to join us at patreon if you go to hammeradeo360.com

[00:17:51] There's a button up there on the top right hand side. There's two different ways click that click the support tab That's all I've got to say there. So Thank you for those of you who do

[00:18:01] The other thing I want to do is I found a lot of people who still don't know about the program either this one field radio or the workbench and It's kind of sad, you know But hey, that's that's not a big deal

[00:18:15] Because you guys like it and listen to it and I just want to remind you to share the show Right. So if you hear somebody in social media looking for an answer

[00:18:24] We might have already covered it in the program send them a link let them know we're here Sharing the show reviewing the show all those things is a great thing that you can do to help the program and just got a review the other

[00:18:35] day from a brand new listener and Frank appreciate you sending that through on iTunes. So thank you all that helps is great and awesome So, uh, let's see past sharing the show

[00:18:47] That's that that's I'm gonna leave that there. I'm getting through this list. I actually made notes. This is working pretty good I normally never make notes. So That's why this is the seventh time I'm recording the show

[00:18:59] 20 minutes in almost and I'm almost done. Okay, so I was asked on Jason's show The hand radio 2.0 live from the ham shack. Did you guys see that now? Here's some stuff Jason may not have told you right I can't do streaming video from my shack

[00:19:15] So what I had to do is shoot my film or my video film. Hold am I I shot my video local? And then upload a two and a half gigs of data to him so that he could then mash them together

[00:19:27] And look like we were having a conversation and you know real time I didn't realize that the camera shifted and like if you watch it You can tell I'm not a video guy because my head's like half in the screen and that's okay

[00:19:39] Face made for radio. I'm happy here on podcasting. So I'll have a link to that in the show if you missed it It was it was great to catch up with Jason awesome guy. I love what he's doing over there

[00:19:48] I don't get to watch it much but when I do I enjoy it and it's funny how We're gonna have them on I mean just I'm gonna stop there. We're gonna have Jason on here in the new year

[00:19:57] So I have a link to that video that Jason from ham radio 2.0 did with myself during my break back before Christmas Actually, it was right after black Friday So talk about black Friday in a few minutes anyway, he asked me in that interview

[00:20:12] Okay, what are you doing in 2018? Where you're going and I didn't really get the question. So I kind of what? He was talking about hamfest, you know, what hamfest are you going to for the last two years? I've been in hamvention and Dayton and Zinio, Ohio

[00:20:24] At this time I have no current plans to attend any Any hamfest maybe except the the real small local ones that I would go to and buy some connectors and wire from here

[00:20:35] Around the upstate of South Carolina now a lot of people like wow man. Why not? Well Here's mr. Transparency again My family my wife and I've been married for 19 years. We've never gone on vacation

[00:20:49] Honestly, we've gone to family reunions. We've gone here and there. We've never gone on vacation We've never packed up our kids and said hey, we're going on vacation. So last year Dad went to hamvention dad went to podfest dad did a couple of things and the fam's here

[00:21:06] You know my wife's here and I'm somewhere else and I'm not doing that. I'm That was selfish and I'm just not that guy so Um, no hamfest plans. No hamvention plans

[00:21:19] Basically my notes right here say no family vacation. No ham radio trips. That's kels rule. Not anybody else is um to me, that's just that makes sense being a good dad. So That's that I don't know. I know that george and jeremy and uh john's got a patreon

[00:21:37] I go fund me thing going where he's trying to uh to raise some funds to take the field radio podcast to hamvention I'll put a note In the show notes for that so I don't have any plans on attending those unless just you know

[00:21:51] Like my wife decides she wants to go to ohio and may or whatever it is, which is highly doubtful, but Anyway I'll miss you guys, but I don't have any plans to be there this year. So uh, let's keep it all on. I've got some notes

[00:22:03] I've never made notes for a show I've tried to record the show about six or seven times. I just couldn't I couldn't get I couldn't say what I wanted to say what I wanted to say it so I made notes and uh

[00:22:13] My notes were telling me to tell you about my new studio now. This is kind of quasi exciting Um, but not 100 because it hadn't happened yet But my wife over the couple last couple years has teased

[00:22:25] Allowing me some space in her shop. My wife is a hairstylist. We've owned hair salon since 2001 In town it's about a 30 minute drive from here But up there we have the charter pipeline. We have heating and air conditioning. It's really cold in my shack right now

[00:22:42] Um, so we're looking at potentially Um, well, I guess I can go ahead and say this now Um, my wife I've been on her to uh to begin a podcast with me for about two years now And now she's wondering when we're going to start it. So

[00:22:58] We're looking at creating a space inside her salon. We've got an empty room that we're think we're going to open up for a uh podcast type studio as well as um a space where we could do uh Do uh

[00:23:14] Bible studies and whatnot that that we chose to there Instead of here down in the country where nobody lives nearby and With the podcasting thing it'd be great because I could even do video up there. So anyway, uh, the only there's a couple of problems with this

[00:23:30] Awesome thing right one. It's a 30 minute drive one way Which means you don't you can't just walk out the back door up the hill 100 yards and start working But it does mean that it has heating in air and it has a full-on broadband crazy

[00:23:46] Charter internet connection. That's just stupid Which would allow me, you know some flexibility in what I'm able to do Technologically with my show and the future of any shows that we do Uh, but uh, you know, then I run in. Well, I can't go up there every day

[00:24:02] So there's kind of a less flexible schedule, which may be Um, just kind of a precursor to why you know every two weeks it ain't gonna work for right now so

[00:24:11] That kind of ties back to that. Um, but but really for me personally one of the most exciting things about this Is uh, I will have the potential to Help my daughters finally get their show launched. Um help my son

[00:24:25] Continue his program and even my older boys who are in the the filmmaking end of things It may be some real potential for all of us to work together on some projects

[00:24:34] That i'm really excited about most especially for my wife and I and I gotta do this url's I need to be using them, right? So That's uh, that's the potential and we'll see it may happen

[00:24:45] Sometime between now and spring and it would be amazing to have a spot that's not uh, Not up here in my barn to do some podcasting with so Uh, there's that now a new year means new gear I uh back in november

[00:25:01] Uh sold my kenwood ts8 50 that my family gave me for my 40th birthday And sold it to a gentleman up north of me and took a hit on the shipping, but I made enough Well, I didn't I can't say that

[00:25:15] I didn't make any money because I didn't pay anything for it. It was a gift But okay, so here's the breakdown after icomm sends me my 200 rebate and after I sold my ts 850 I was able to purchase in the real world A icomm ic7 100

[00:25:32] Which george jeremy talked me into in the shopping show I was able to buy that i'm going to have about 125 dollars in it and i'm totally excited. This is the very first Actually, it's the non chinese handy talky brand new Ham radio radio i've ever had

[00:25:49] That sounded funny, but here's all my kenwood stuff I bought either used or second. Uh, what do they call that like a a b-stock? Okay Everything else has has been previously owned

[00:26:00] This is the the first brand new radio i've ever been able to open that nobody else had open Except the person who closed the box the last time so I was really excited about that

[00:26:09] I can tell you that uh, I don't know what i've done, but I'm not getting any audio at the microphone I found that out trying to trying to do an aries net the other night. So, uh,

[00:26:20] Anyway, I've used it a couple of times. Uh, I bought the rt software amazing Yeah, I was not expecting how cool that was so I got the rt software for the icomm ic7 100 they didn't pay me to say that by the way

[00:26:33] I'm just telling you that it was pretty amazing how it downloaded all the d-star stuff that I still don't know how to do but Still not interested in that but it's there and i'm really excited about this radio so far. It's amazing
