How Families Actually Use GMRS When It Matters

Most people buy their first GMRS radios with good intentions.
They want a backup plan.
They want a way to talk when the phones quit.
They want their kids to have a safe way to reach them.

But here’s the truth that hits a lot of families the moment something really happens:

They bought the radios… but no one ever learned how to use them.

This episode of the Prep Comms Podcast settles that problem once and for all.

The 3-Button Rule

Every GMRS radio has three things that matter:

Power
Channel
Push-to-talk

If your whole household can remember only that much, you’ll be fine.
GMRS isn’t supposed to be complicated. We make it complicated.

Choosing the Right Channel Group

You don’t need to memorize the FCC chart.
Use this simple rule:

Channels 15–22: maximum distance, repeater access
Channels 1–7: neighborhood range, campsite, driveway
Channels 8–14: very short-range, handheld-only

That’s the entire GMRS system boiled down.

How to Know if You’re Hitting the Repeater

This is the question everybody asks.

Key up, identify, and listen for the repeater tail — that small “click” after your transmission.
If you hear it, you’re in.
If you don’t, you’re on simplex whether you meant to be or not.

No programming menu walkthrough required.

The 10-Second Training Script

Families don’t need a class.
They need a sentence.

Here’s the one I give people:

“Power on.
Go to Channel 17.
Press the button and talk slow.”

Simple wins every time.

When the Radio Seems Broken

Most failures fall into two categories:

They hear you, but you can’t hear them.
You’re operating on different modes. Move both radios to channels 15–22.

You hear nothing at all.
Terrain, power, or channel choice.
Switch to a higher channel and try again.

A Simple Weekly Routine

You don’t need drills or binders.
Just do this once a week:

• Turn on every radio
• Make one call
• Confirm the main household channel
• Done

If your family can remember the channel number and how to press the button, you’re already ahead of most people.
