[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, not too many days have passed since my last time with you.
[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for coming back to the Prep Comms podcast.
[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_00]: My name's Caleb Nelson.
[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: My amateur radio call sign, if you're interested, is Kilo for Charlie Delta November.
[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: And that was my computer whom I forgot to mute.
[00:00:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry about that.
[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a ham radio guy.
[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I have been since maybe 2011, I think the spring of before that was a CB radio guy
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: before that, a shortwave listener, just kind of roll it all in together.
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00]: I am a communications nerd at my very core.
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And some people say it's actually a geek and some others call it a nerd.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that my children would probably say nerd and maybe some of my peers would say
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_00]: geek because neither one of them really know the true definition.
[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's not why we're here.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Why we're here is to continue the conversation about communication methods, solutions, reasonings
[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: and whatnot for those who are preppers or maybe you're not a prepper.
[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_00]: You're just interested in an alternative means of communication.
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: If your telephone quit working and you wanted to talk to your mom at any level,
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: anywhere in between any of those, you're you found your place.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: You found your guy.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And here I am to be able to sit down and chat with you about what is another, another
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_00]: means of alternate communications for intelligence gathering.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_00]: That sounded weird during an event.
[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're a prepper, you're prepping for something.
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_00]: And we've gone through the power of an AMF radio, a weather radio, a shortwave
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: radio, a scanner, all these things.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: We've covered all these bases.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And I've got one more, one more type of intelligence gathering device.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Or if you just want to be kind of boring about it, something to listen to.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to stop on the listening tos after this show and we're going to get into
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_00]: the talking tos as we progress further.
[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted to put this in here because it's it's something I think a lot of people
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_00]: are completely unaware of.
[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's not necessarily the tool it was 10 years ago.
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_00]: It definitely is not the tool that it was 40 years ago.
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_00]: But I think that if, if you've got the time, you've got the patience and the desire,
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_00]: a free to air satellite system may be something that you need to look into.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'll tell you first off, free to air satellite are most of the time you're
[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_00]: going to hear it called FTA, free to air FTA satellite.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: These can be the dishes like your great granddaddy had back in the day up in
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_00]: the mountains of West Virginia.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_00]: It was about 10 feet wide and he had a huge motor connected to it and he would
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_00]: tune it around and he wouldn't let you turn it on after dark kind of stuff.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: That was back when satellite was kind of, um, it was a new thing, a new
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: technology for consumers that were very expensive, you know, two to three
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: grand back in the late seventies.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_00]: And you could buy a brand new really nice car for 10 grand.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: So not very many people invested in these things, but if you did, you
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_00]: could kind of pirate or skim off a lot of the, uh, early television channels,
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_00]: most especially cable TV as it was coming into its own.
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And it was just out there.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you had the right equipment, uh, with it tweaked a little bit here
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: or there, you could receive these channels pretty much for nothing minus
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: the equipment costs, no monthly subscriptions.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: And then, uh, in the 1990s, the rules kind of changed up.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_00]: They allowed, uh, the satellite broadcasters to actually encrypt their
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_00]: signal, which meant that if you weren't paying far and had the correct keys,
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_00]: if you, yeah, you know, like the encryption keys, you couldn't decode
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_00]: what was being transmitted.
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, so that kind of made that into the hobby or the service go away.
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And it became more of a hobby because also in the 1990s, they
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_00]: released the RCA direct TV dish network sorts of things.
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of different brands back then, but these are the
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_00]: smaller dishes, they're about 30 to 36 inches around.
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_00]: And these are the ones you're probably more familiar with.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, the reason it changed so much was they allowed the signals to be
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_00]: encrypted, uh, and you could focus more on one satellite, like they put all
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_00]: their services on one versus a multiple range of satellites, like
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Papa's satellite dish that used to move around and growl with that big motor.
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Nowadays, that wasn't necessary here in the 1990s because all the channels
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_00]: were on one, they're on one downlink.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you just had it pointed at static pointed in that direction,
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_00]: you could receive what you were paying for in your box in your house to
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_00]: coded it and the rural United States once again enjoyed television,
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_00]: except now they were paying for it.
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_00]: And crazy enough, that's kind of dying away because internet's
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_00]: getting everywhere and now we're moved to streaming.
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_00]: So there's a little history about FTA, but let me tell you why I
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_00]: think FTA at least at some level may be worth a look.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: So my wife and I moved to the country with our children about 15 or so years
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: ago, we get down here, there's nothing, there's really still no internet.
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: They're running fiber optic cable down the road now, but I'm not
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_00]: sure when that will happen.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And if I'll even subscribe, but we've been here a very long time
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and there's nothing, if you don't have an antenna with a mask and a
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_00]: rotator, you're not going to pick up any broadcast television.
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, you can do the satellite internet, which we're not talking about, but
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_00]: that was popular for a while.
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we actually went into with AT&T who is our service provider for our
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_00]: telephones is the only one on the farm with a wireless broadband, which
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_00]: was just basically a big hotspot and it worked okay.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Now we're in star link, but when we got down here, there was no
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: TV, no cable, no nothing.
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And of course being a homeschool family and looking for programs
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_00]: that had, uh, eternal value and meaning and teaching to them.
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_00]: We didn't want to just have, you know, like the local PBS station
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_00]: running 24 seven in our house.
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Cause there's a lot of stuff on there.
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: And that most especially now, even back then that was not great
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_00]: for your children.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: So we decided to invest in a free to air satellite.
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And what this allowed me to do was to put a 36 inch dish, uh,
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_00]: facing, I guess that's it's kind of South Southwest and, uh, established
[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_00]: that had a $100 decoder box and ran cable through the house to the TV.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And we could get at that point about 140 channels.
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, the vast majority of them were in different languages, but still
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_00]: there were channels that had the Christian programming on them that
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_00]: we were interested in and being able to allow our children to watch.
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_00]: And that was kind of like what we did.
[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_00]: It didn't cost anything beyond the equipment pricing.
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: So there was no monthly subscription, anything like that.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_00]: But there was a good 12 to 15 religious channels that coincided with our
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_00]: beliefs and we utilize those as, I don't know, television entertainment
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_00]: and the kids TV.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what you want to call it, but that's how we kind of, uh,
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: went through a couple of years, probably about five or six years.
[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_00]: And our kids could watch the programming that we thought was good for them.
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_00]: And we could watch teaching and whatnot as well.
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And there was a lot of that out there and we enjoyed that.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_00]: But one of the things that I also enjoyed in addition to that type of
[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_00]: programming was the fact that there were some, what they call back haul channels.
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Back haul like you haul a trailer, H a U L back all channels.
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_00]: And these were connectivities or connections between news networks
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and a remote, uh, remote transmitter.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_00]: So you've seen those satellite trucks at the, at the NASCAR races
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_00]: or at the presidential rallies or whatever.
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And what we were able to do is we could get those signals for free as they were
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_00]: coming back down to the news network station to then, you know, use in
[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_00]: production to show what they wanted to show or delete what they didn't want
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_00]: to show.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, one of the coolest things we did with our FDA satellite just in that
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_00]: regard was during the Trump inauguration, we had the back haul channels
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_00]: watching those and I was able to show my kids like what was really happening
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_00]: because that was the back haul channel.
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_00]: This was the live live feed that was coming in before it was, you know,
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_00]: talked over or commercialized or whatever from the news channels.
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So what I did was I turned on the back haul channel and you could see the
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_00]: inauguration happening just like that where no one was speaking over a
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_00]: speaker, any of that stuff.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_00]: And then I would flip over to, to a national television station, you
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_00]: know, a regular TV channel and show them, see how it's been manipulated.
[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_00]: See how they're not allowing that person to speak or they're talking
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_00]: over that person or it was a great history lesson in propaganda for my kids.
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Let me just leave it there.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I loved that about the FDA satellite.
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, a couple of things happened around the house.
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I've talked about Carla being sick and things going on different and
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: the FDA satellite kind of just went away, went the way of the dodo.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was kind of bummed because I really enjoyed, uh, not only the
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_00]: back haul channels and the religious broadcasting, I also really got a
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_00]: chance of having their, uh, English sometimes, and sometimes it wasn't
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_00]: English, but having their news broadcast over the satellites.
[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was really cool.
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_00]: So we would, mainly me, we could sit and watch television news from another
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_00]: country report on what was happening here and report on what was happening
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_00]: around the world from that country's perspective.
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Now that might sound exactly like how I described shortwave radio.
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_00]: And really that's exactly what I'm describing.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_00]: It's an alternative view against the propagandized information that you may be
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_00]: getting, no matter which country you're living in, no matter which side of
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_00]: the argument you're on.
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_00]: So FTA, in my opinion was great for that about 10 years ago.
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Now what happened is a lot of the channels now, 10 years later have gotten
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_00]: away from that and they're just using the internet point to point
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_00]: using fiber and all these things.
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of the channels, even on the one channel we had on the
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_00]: satellite, we had was a hundred plus channels.
[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I went on the other day, got it working.
[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_00]: There was like seven channels, seven channels.
[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And before we'd had hundreds of channels.
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I also have a rotator on my dish and can get multiple dishes.
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And I found it across the board.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the channels that I used to watch the news channels from
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_00]: other countries and whatnot, they've gone away, but there's still some out
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_00]: there and that's why I wanted to mention this to you because I think a
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_00]: lot of people have never heard of FTA satellite.
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_00]: It's got a huge following.
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_00]: It's almost like a ham radio hobby, but it's FTA satellite.
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_00]: And there's guys all over the country that have these dishes.
[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And I've got one dish.
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_00]: There's people who have eight, 10, 12, 15 dish set up in their yard
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_00]: with all these different receivers and whatnot.
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, people, you can find people who are into everything.
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what you learn, especially with communications.
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of people into FTA satellite steel, and I learned the most
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_00]: about FTA satellite from a forum, which is still active called satellite guys.
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll link that in the show notes.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So if any of this sounds interesting at all to you, go to the
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_00]: satellites, satellite guys forum, get in there and ask some questions.
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_00]: There's so many smart people in there.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Ke4est Michael from up in Western North Carolina actually came to my home and
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_00]: helped me install my rotator on my satellite dish years ago.
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And Michael's just a, he's a brilliant guy when it comes to the satellite
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_00]: stuff, it's a hobby for him, much like communications and ham radio
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_00]: and what is for me, but in, in addition to a hobby, just like
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_00]: shortwave listening, just like ham radio, just like CB radio, there
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_00]: is more to it and for a prepper in regards to communications.
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_00]: And FTA satellite can give you a look into another country's view.
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's really cool to be able to see their news.
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Like we watch ours, they're watching theirs.
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_00]: They have different presenters.
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_00]: They have different personalities.
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of them have different languages, but you can generally tell
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_00]: what's going on when you're watching the program.
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I just think it's a really great addition.
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Now before I have told you that you have to buy an AMF from radio,
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_00]: you have to buy shortwave, you have to get a scanner.
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to go there with FTA satellite 10 years ago, making
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_00]: this program 10 years ago, you have to buy FTA satellite today.
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_00]: The way it's changed, it's gotten less effective in regards to the
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_00]: information you can gather now, but it's still effective enough for me to
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_00]: mention it in the program and possibly whet your appetite for something a
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_00]: little different that's pretty inexpensive to get into.
[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, the decoder is about a hundred bucks.
[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_00]: The dish is about a hundred bucks and you need some
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_00]: cable to run between them.
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_00]: That's really all it takes.
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_00]: If you want to add a motor to pick up multiple satellites,
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_00]: you may be at another a hundred dollars, but for less than three or
[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_00]: 400 bucks, you can get into this.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_00]: You can watch the television news from anywhere in the world.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And I know, Oh, well, I can do that on the internet.
[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_00]: You sure can.
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_00]: As long as the internet is working.
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Just want to remind you, if you watch some of these movies that are
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_00]: filmed overseas, especially third world type of, you know, backgrounds
[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and films, you'll notice every house has a satellite on it.
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And the reason being is because a lot of nations have their own
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_00]: satellites that produce their own signals that carry their own
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_00]: nationalized news and television programming.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're interested in that, if you, if you like television,
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_00]: if you're in the things of that nature, maybe you still have a VCR.
[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_00]: I do by the way.
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, you may really, really dig FTA satellite free to air satellite.
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, again, it doesn't cost you anything to watch these programs
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_00]: as long as you have the ability to receive the programs.
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, there's some equipment required for that.
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll put some links in the show notes with some trusted sellers
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_00]: of equipment.
[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I've bought stuff from Amazon and eBay before for, for all of my stuff.
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple of dealers, maybe one or two dealers left that you can
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_00]: deal with that I would recommend.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And I'll put all that in the show notes again, this isn't like
[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_00]: a bank breaking kind of you have to have this, but I didn't want to
[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_00]: not mention it to you because there's a lot of information out there.
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_00]: There's news, there's backhaul feeds on satellites.
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, and that's just, you know, that can be, uh, like a news reporter.
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_00]: It can be a weather thing.
[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_00]: It can be conflict in another country.
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of information you can gather.
[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not as easy as turning a shortwave radio on.
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: And there is some equipment expense and some labor to get that installed.
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, it's, if you're kind of geeky, you may really dig it.
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_00]: It's called free to air satellite.
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And it is really still a very valid means of information collection.
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_00]: And again, if you're preparing for an event, you want all
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_00]: the information you can get.
[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_00]: So if your DSL, we have those anymore.
