DECEMBER 17 — Ham Radio Starter Path (Yes, really.)

A lot of folks get intimidated by ham radio because they picture big stations, towers, and a wall full of gear.

But almost nobody starts there.

Every solid operator I’ve ever met began with one simple handheld, a little curiosity, and the willingness to learn the basics.

Ham radio opens doors GMRS and MURS just can’t.

More range.
More repeaters.
More ways to communicate without leaning on outside systems.

And when phones and infrastructure struggle, ham radio keeps reaching past all of it.

I’ve watched my wife and kids study for a few weeks — or less (four days) — and pass their tests without any drama. Once people realize the test isn’t hard, everything opens up: VHF, UHF, HF, digital modes, nets, and real confidence that your family can communicate farther than your neighborhood entrance.

If your household wants capability that doesn’t depend on anyone else, ham radio is worth the investment.

Capability grows one small commitment at a time. Ham radio is no different.
