Here are my top 6 digital modes that I personally use and recommend for preppers building a solid communications plan:
1. Winlink (VHF/HF)
Winlink is the go-to for email over radio, working on VHF and HF to send messages and files anywhere in the world without internet. It’s perfect for daily check-ins or critical messaging during outages.
2. JS8Call (HF)
JS8Call expands HF digital communication into real-time conversational text messaging with persistent nets running 24/7. It’s a reliable way to chat and share quick messages across long distances.
3. VarAC (HF)
VarAC supports digital voice and data on HF, enabling conversations and file transfers with clear, efficient signals—a flexible choice for preppers wanting both voice and data over one radio.
4. VaraFM (VHF Packet)
VaraFM is a modern take on VHF Packet, providing faster, more reliable file and message transfers, including support for Winlink traffic. It’s excellent for local VHF digital networks needing speed and dependability.
5. APRS (VHF)
Often thought of as GPS tracking, APRS also has powerful messaging features for short texts and alerts over VHF—great for everyday coordination and emergency use.
6. VHF Packet (BBS/P2P)
VHF Packet at 1200 baud offers point-to-point chat, bulletin boards, and resilient node-based messaging. Its community-built networks keep local communication flowing when it matters.
