It usually starts the same way.
A dad hears the weather alert.
A mom watches a road close in real time.
A family loses power, and phones stop working.
That’s when people realize they can’t rely on what used to work.
They want to do something about it. So they Google.
They end up with too many tabs, too much noise, and no real clarity.
And more often than not—they buy a radio that doesn’t actually help.
What I’ve Seen Repeatedly
I’ve spent over 30 years working in communications—from FM radio to emergency services to teaching families how to stay connected when things go sideways.
And over the years, I’ve watched people buy the wrong thing for the right reasons.
They didn’t know what would work for their situation.
They didn’t know who to ask.
And they didn’t know how to connect the gear to a plan.
The radio wasn’t the failure.
The lack of context was.
The Problem Isn’t the Equipment. It’s the Isolation.
The mistake isn’t buying a cheap radio.
The mistake is thinking the radio alone will make your family ready.
A lot of gear out there is designed for hobbyists, not households.
The features look impressive.
But they don’t teach you how to use it under stress.
They don’t come with roles, routines, or recovery.
And they definitely don’t tell you which band is legal for which family member.
That’s the gap I work to close.
Where I Point Families When They Ask for Help
When people ask me what to buy, I usually don’t start with the radio.
I start with a few basic questions:
Who are you trying to reach?
How far apart will you be?
What kind of communication feels doable in your family?
Once we’ve talked that through, I send them to one of three places.
Not because they’re stores.
But because I built or curated them myself to give people a clean place to start—without the noise.
1. My Amazon Store
What it’s for: Ready-to-go radios and accessories I trust
If you’re just starting out, and you want a no-nonsense way to pick a radio that actually works—this is where I’ve organized everything that’s passed the “real-world filter.”
It’s not every radio out there.
It’s just the ones I’d hand to a friend and say, “This will work for what you’re doing.”

2. GMRSRadioStore.com
What it’s for: Clear starting point for GMRS radios
GMRS is one of the best tools for family communication. But the market is flooded with radios that are mislabeled, misconfigured, or not even legal to use.
This store acts as a clean jump-off point. It’s not just about equipment—it’s about helping people avoid the mistakes I’ve seen over and over again.

3. PrepComms Gear Shop
What it’s for: Mindset, training tools, and household-ready resources
This is where I keep the materials that fill the gaps—PDFs, quick-reference cards, decals, printables, and frameworks.
If you’re trying to build a household that can practice and improve without needing to become “radio people,” this is where I send you.

Common Mistakes Families Make When They Buy Radios
Mistake #1: Choosing a radio with no idea how to use it
Mistake #2: Buying advanced gear before a basic plan exists
Mistake #3: Assuming one radio will solve the whole problem
Mistake #4: Confusing hobby features with family needs
Mistake #5: Thinking the radio is more important than the routine
If you don’t know when or how to use the radio, it doesn’t matter how good it is.
How to Start Simply and Build Over Time
If you’re unsure where to begin, keep it small and real.
Start with a no-license radio that your whole family can use
Choose one check-in routine (e.g., every evening or after a storm alert)
Practice using plain language and roles (not codes or call signs)
Expand from there only once your family is comfortable
That’s the approach I teach inside the Family Connect System.
It works whether you’re brand new or adding radios to an existing preparedness plan.
If You Want to Build the Whole System, Not Just Buy the Tools
If this post clarified some things, that’s what we walk families through inside the Family Connect System.
We don’t just tell you which radio to buy.
We walk you through how to use it, how to teach it, and how to make it stick when stress shows up.
If you want to see that system in action, watch the free webinar.

You Don’t Need to Be a Radio Person
You don’t need to get technical.
You don’t need a license to start.
You just need a reason to care—and a way to move forward without confusion.
That’s what these stores are for.
That’s what the system is for.
And that’s why I’m here—to walk with families as they build something that holds.
