The First Step: A Generator Bought in Fear
We bought our first generator in 1999—right before our wedding. Like many couples back then, we were spooked by Y2K. The world didn’t collapse on January 1st. But that generator became one of the best purchases we’ve ever made.
During ice storms, it has run for days and even weeks at a time. It has kept food safe, lights on, and kids warm. What started as a fear-based buy turned into a foundation of resilience that has served us for more than two decades.
Cancer and the Pantry That Helped—but Didn’t Save Us
Years later, my wife Carla was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. Doctors gave her four months to live. At the time, we had five children at home.
Our pantry helped stretch groceries. But it wasn’t food storage that carried us. It was people. Friends and neighbors showed up with meals, support, and prayers. That experience taught me preparedness isn’t about stockpiles—it’s about community.
The Dirty Well and the Filter That Changed Everything
For years, our family got sick every month. The culprit? Our well water. The solution came when we installed British Berkefeld filters. Overnight, the sickness stopped.
Later, we added a hand pump to the system—just in time for Hurricane Helene. When the grid went down for a week, we had clean water every day while others lined up for bottled cases. That week proved that simple, working solutions are worth more than any gear list.
Why Communication Matters More Than Ever
Food and water sustain you. But communication connects you.
When AT&T’s network went down, millions panicked. Not because they lacked food, but because they couldn’t talk. When communication dies, confidence dies.
That’s why radios, backup plans, and family communication systems are not luxuries. They’re essentials.
Preparedness Rooted in Faith, Not Fear
Preparedness has carried us through storms, cancer, and grid failures. It started with fear in 1999. But it has matured into faith, family, and forward thinking.
That’s why I started Prep Comms. To give families practical, simple communication systems that work when the grid doesn’t. Not fear. Not theory. Just real solutions.
Because when the lights go out, your family’s ability to stay connected is what truly matters.
